The Mound Grove name comes long before the golf course. The original builder, Jesse Coover, coined the name as the Italianate 1840’s home was built on a mound located in a grove of hemlock trees.
The three story barn was built later in the 1860s from hand hewed hemlock beams notched together with wooden pins. The stone foundation was built from field stones found on the property. The barn boasts 6,400 square feet and is 60 feet tall.
Peter and Helen Biebel purchased the property from Fred Coover in 1921.
One of Peter’s 13 children, Edward Biebel, who was born in the house, purchased the land and began farming, promising his father “to keep the land green.”
Edward Biebel Sr. married Mary Ann Allgeier on May 30, 1953. From 1953 to 1972 the couple was blessed with 10 children, all of whom grew up working on the farm. They herded cattle, horses, and harvested thousands of bushels of potatoes, grain, and bales of hay and straw.
Over time, Edward began envisioning a better life for his family while still keeping the promise he made to his father. In 1984, the idea of a golf course was proposed to his friends and family.
Construction began in 1988. An auction took place that winter to sell all the farming equipment in order to transition into the future of the land. It truly was a family effort.
After 5 long years of work, Mound Grove officially opened as a nine hole golf course in June of 1993. The back nine opened in 1998.
Edward Biebel Jr. and his wife Stephanie Biebel purchased Mound Grove.
Mound Grove celebrates 30 years of business! We appreciate you for visiting us here at Mound Grove all these years. The history of this land runs deep and we thank you for being a part of it.
